Workboats Consulting had recently the privilege of being involved in organizing the logistics and towing of a newbuild hull from Gdańsk, Poland to Nasva, Estonia. In the near future, the newbuild vessel will serve as multipurpose workboat for the Estonian State Fleet. The first phase of the construction was completed in Gdańsk, the final outfitting will be carried out at Baltic Workboats in Nasva, Estonia. Our role included organizing the logistics and ensuring the vessel would reach its destination safely and on time.
Planning the towage operation
The first phase of our operation began in Gdańsk, with the inspection of the hull for the upcoming voyage. It also included coordinating with the local authorities to secure the required clearances. Given the rather long upcoming voyage and the unpredictable autumn sea conditions in the Baltic sea, a powerful tugboat was chosen to handle the potentially demanding conditions. Following the long and careful planning around the weather conditions and voyage options, the tandem departed Gdańsk. The crossing took around sixty hours and concluded at Roomassaare Harbour, where we had arranged for a handover. From there, the local tugboat guided the hull safely through coastal waters to Nasva.
Coordinating the logistics
Behind the scenes, this project was as much about logistics as it was about seamanship. Every piece of the puzzle had to fit: coordinating berthing slots, scheduling the tugboat and towage, and keeping all parties involved within the loop from Gdańsk to Estonia. Acting as a central link between Baltic Workboats, port authorities, and towage operators, we ensured that the operation ran as a well-oiled machine: without incidents and unnecessary delays.

Marine Warranty Survey
Equally important was the involvement of an independent marine surveyor. Prior to departure, a Marine Warranty Survey was conducted to make sure the newbuild hull had been appropriately prepared for the upcoming voyage as stated in Shippers’ Preparations. Inspection of towing arrangement as well as equipment was also carried out, from valid certification to visual inspection. The surveyor then monitored the connection process of the towing arrangement, ensuring the plans were adherred to and documenting every step of the process. Only after the surveyor was satisfied, the Certificate of Approval was issued, giving the tandem the green light to commence with the voyage.
With the surveyor monitoring every step of the operation, careful planning and close coordination, the towage operation could occur as planned earlier. The multipurpose vessel hull arrived in Nasva without damage and ready for Baltic Workboats to carry out the final construction phase. For us, the project was another demonstration of how careful logistics management and detailed marine warranty procedures come together to guarantee safe and efficient vessel transport.
